HPC booster is "Energy Storage Highlight 2019"
pv magazine selects ADS-TEC fast charging technology as innovation no. 1

The application of the HPC booster convinced the top-class jury of industry and branch experts and won the highlight ranking of pv magazine at Energy Storage Europe, the leading international trade fair for energy storage. ADS-TEC's fast-charging technology is characterised in particular by the fact that it "solves the problem of setting up a fast-charging infrastructure" for electromobility "by battery storage," says jury member Mark Higgins (COO Strategen). This means that in many places a complex and cost-intensive network expansion can be avoided.

A unique feature of the system is the compact size of the HPC booster. The footprint is only 1.20 × 1.20 m. "For this reason, the HPC booster can also be used in cities where space is limited," says ADS-TEC’s CEO Thomas Speidel. The award ceremony took place on Wednesday 13 March at Energy Storage Europe in Duesseldorf. The complete special edition of the pv magazine on Energy Storage Europe including the complete ranking can be found here.

ADS-TEC with new storage series for indoor and outdoor
Flexible complete systems in the sector home & small business

The new StoraXe system series is designed to meet the need for flexible, medium-sized storage solutions for larger homes, multi-family homes, businesses, commercial and public facilities. The flexible scalability in terms of storage capacity and performance enables the best possible fulfillment of customer requirements. The new portfolio includes systems with installed capacities from 30 to 66 kilowatt hours and outputs from 20 to 60 kilowatts.

In addition to the indoor solution, the portfolio will now also include an outdoor solution for the first time. Thanks to the integrated emergency power function, the systems are suitable for numerous storage applications.

The new StoraXe systems for indoor and outdoor use were presented for the first time at ees Europe/Intersolar in Munich and are expected to be available at autumn 2019.

Swarm storage project in Kempten in Allgaeu
Stabilisation of the electricity grid through large battery storage in the distribution grid

In 2017, egrid applications & consulting GmbH implemented the "Schwarmspeicher Allgaeu" project for Allgaeuer Ueberlandwerk GmbH. It is a stationary ADS-TEC storage system distributed over six stations, which is operated in a multi-purpose application as a battery power plant. In cooperation with the Nuertingen-based storage specialist, the performance and capacities of the individual systems could be optimally adapted. An important aspect for the integration into an urban infrastructure such as Kempten is the small installation space. Accordingly, a compact solution with a particularly high performance was important, which is what the ADS-TEC battery technology offers in particular.

The main task of the large storage is to stabilise the power grid by providing primary control power. The stations can also be operated individually and perform tasks such as providing emergency power. The last system was added in December 2018 and is identical in performance and capacity to its predecessors. The swarm is to be continuously expanded. So far, the power plant has a power of 3 MW, a capacity of around 2 MWh and, like all large ADS-TEC batteries, has been prequalified right from the start.

The storage systems have a capacity of 112 kWh per station and an output of 500 kW. In combination with one 500 kW inverter system each from Gustav Klein and control technique from egrid, this results in a highly scalable energy system.

Trade fairs review
Successful ees Europe, Hannover Messe and ESE 2019

ADS-TEC can already look back on several successful and interesting energy trade fairs in 2019. At ESE 2019 in Duesseldorf, the professional battery storage solutions attracted a great attention from the professional audience and guests from the world of politics. At the ADS-TEC booth we could welcome Dr. Joachim Pfeiffer (CDU). The member of the German Federal Parliament gained an insight into the latest developments in the field of battery storage systems. The highlight of the fair was the awarding of our HPC booster as the Energy Storage Highlight 2019. "The award is a great honour for our company and recognition for the long and hard development work which we invested in this product," said Karl Knezar, Head of Sales Charging Infrastructure, at the award ceremony in Duesseldorf.

Furthermore ADS-TEC took part in Integrated Energy – the leading trade fair for integrated energy systems and mobility – as part of the Hannover Fair. At the Baden-Wuerttemberg Pavilion, the storage professional presented its world-leading 320 kW DC fast charging technology "High Power Charging", which enables extremely short charging times even in the power-limited distribution network thanks to an integrated high-performance battery.

At ees Europe/Intersolar in Munich, ADS-TEC demonstrated its unique selling propositions: the high level of integration – everything above the cell comes from a single source – as well as the secure IT connection and the added value resulting from its own cloud solution. The BVES (Bundesverband Energiespeicher) and the StoREgio association were also represented at the booth.

ADS-TEC PowerBooster for Africa leaves Nuertingen
First time round-the-clock power for a hospital in DR Congo

In Central Africa in the Democratic Republic Congo, the Protestant order "Christustraeger Bruderschaft" from Lower Franconia has been operating a hospital since 1980. Since the beginning of the 20th century there has been a mission station in the village of Vanga in the DR Congo, from which many local congregations, schools and a large hospital have emerged. A daily challenge is the electricity supply, as there is no public power grid. Energy from large diesel generators is available only a few hours a day. However, diesel is expensive and transport alone is often connected with difficulties and high risks.

ADS-TEC provides a storage system to ensure round-the-clock power supply for the hospital and the entire ward. In cooperation with the company Vesofast, which supplies the solar system, and the responsible persons of the brotherhood, a suitable system was put together. Employees of the brotherhood have already been trained for operation at ADS-TEC in advance. The battery system is now on its way to Africa. It is the StoraXe storage system "PowerBooster", which is developed in a mini container as a closed complete system including control, inverter and air conditioning especially for outdoor use. With a capacity of 120 kWh and an output of 100 kW, it can provide the stored solar power even when the sun is not shining.

Pilot project second life battery storage in Hamburg
Container system with around 0.5 MWh in operation

The MAN second life battery storage was delivered and installed at the final location in Hamburg Bergedorf on April 9. The participating companies VHH, MAN and ADS-TEC are hoping that the use of second life batteries will provide them with new insights into the life cycle and re-use of batteries and the stabilisation of the power grid when used in electric mobility.

ADS-TEC is providing the complete container system for the pilot project. This system combines 50 used batteries, each with an output of 9.9 kWh, with a total output of 495 kWh gross capacity. The storage fills up at low load times. At peak times the electric buses of the VHH can be charged. The aim is to reuse the batteries in order to save costs and stabilise the electricity grid.
