The topic of safety of battery storage systems has top priority in all developments from ADS-TEC.
• In the development of their lithium-ion battery storage systems, ADS-TEC uses a redundant, multi-level safety concept from the cell to the entire storage system
• The development process is strictly based on safety standards IEC 61508 and ISO 26262
• Even though there are currently no officially valid standards for stationary battery storage systems, the functional and electrical safety of the battery systems is tested and certified by accredited testing laboratories (VDE) according to future standards
• Moreover, orientation is towards other standards for battery safety that are still in the development phase
• In total, the ADS-TEC safety concept fulfills already today far more requirements and targets concerning battery safety than required in standards and application rules. That is not least because of a constant exchange during development with the cell manufactures.

ADS-TEC actively cooperates with the relevant standardisation bodies for the safety of stationary energy storage systems.
• Active involvement in working groups of the BVES (German Energy Storage Association)
• Committee work in the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies), a body of the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) and the Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (VDE)

Quality and certification - The basis of all developments ADS-TEC utilises only selected technologies from renowned cell manufacturers.
• Use of high-quality cells from renowned manufacturers who are able to show relevant safety standards and certificates even on a cell level
• Constant, direct exchange during development with the cell manufacturers
• Final release of the cells for integration in battery modules is given only after extensive testing and inspection in the in-house testing laboratories
• The intelligent battery management systems (BMS) are developed completely in-house
• Multiple technical monitoring levels in the BMS ensure that cells are operated in the permissible parameter range at all times

• All energy storage systems from ADS-TEC satisfy the points of the current checklist for lithium-ion home storage systems issued by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
• Compliance with the checklist of the German Solar Industry Association and of the German Energy Storage Association for the "safety of stationary lithium-ion storage systems in the home sector"
• Compliance with VDE application rules VDE-AR-2510-50 (Stationary energy storage systems with lithium-ion batteries – safety requirements) and VDE-AR-2510-2 (Stationary electrical energy storage systems designed for connection to the low-voltage grid)
• Fulfillment of requirements and targets concerning battery safety going beyond current standards and application rules

Safety features using the StoraXe® Home & Small Business Systems SRS2019/28 as an example
• Two electro-mechanical, normally open DC relays for redundant disconnection of the battery
• In the event of deep discharge or excessive temperature, the battery management system (BMS) provides safe protection against restarting
• Monitoring of overvoltage and undervoltage by the BMS including redundant triggering of the battery shutdown
• Monitoring of the individual cell temperature by the BMS as well as active current limiting in the case of low cell temperature
• Active current limiting for protection against overcharging and deep discharging
• Closed, welded cabinet housing made of metal protects against mechanical damages and temperature effects from the outside and in the event of fire (including closed catch pan for electrolyte that escapes in the event of fire)
