Battery + Storage 2014: StoraXe® battery storage systems from ADS-TEC meet the strictest safety requirements – Functional and electrical safety is tested and certified by accredited testing laboratories (VDE)

Within the this year’s World of Energy Solutions in Stuttgart, ADS-TEC will be presenting at the Battery + Storage from 6 - 8 October 2014 in hall 2, booth B12 the complete product portfolio of lithium-ion battery storage systems for home & small business as well as industrial & infrastructure applications including energy management system.

"The topic of safety of our battery storage systems has top priority in all of our developments", emphasises Ali Natour, Director of System Development for Software & Electronics at ads-tec.

In the development of their lithium-ion battery storage systems, ADS-TEC uses a redundant, multi-level safety concept from the cell to the entire storage system. The development process is strictly based on safety standards IEC 61508 and ISO 26262. "Even though there are currently no officially valid standards for stationary battery storage systems, the functional and electrical safety of our battery systems is tested and certified by accredited testing laboratories (VDE) according to future standards", explains Natour further. Moreover, orientation is towards other standards for battery safety that are still in the development phase, such as VDE application rules VDE-AR-2510-50 and VDE-AR-2510-2.

ADS-TEC is actively involved and working with the relevant standardisation bodies for the safety of stationary energy storage systems – in the German Energy Storage Association (BVES) as well as in the German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (DKE), a body of the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) and the Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (VDE). “Not least because of a constant exchange during development with the cell manufactures, our safety concept fulfills already today far more requirements and targets concerning battery safety than required in standards and application rules”, so Natour.

All energy storage systems from ADS-TEC satisfy – among others – the points of the current checklist for lithium-ion home storage systems issued by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

ads-tec uses only high-quality cells from renowned manufacturers who are able to show rele-vant safety standards and certificates even on a cell level, as is required in, for example, the sensitive automotive industry. The cells are not given final release for integration in the battery modules, however, until they have been extensively tested and inspected in the in-house test-ing laboratories. Even in the battery management system (BMS) of the individual battery mod-ules, which was also completely developed in-house, multiple technical monitoring levels in-dependently determine whether safety-critical conditions are met for the battery cells. The BMS ensures at all times that the cells are operated in the permissible parameter range.

Within the Battery + Storage in Stuttgart, interested visitors can inform themselves from 6 - 8 October 2014 about ads-tec’s safety concept. The energy storage systems from ADS-TEC can be seen in hall 2, booth B12. Furthermore, Thomas Speidel, ADS-TEC CEO, gives a lecture about “energy storage systems for grid services” at the conference which takes place parallel to the trade fair.

At the exhibition, the medium-sized Swabian company will be showing its whole portfolio of lithium-ion battery storage systems. The storage systems for home & small business are used as solar-power storage systems with storage capacities from 8 kWh to 25 kWh in large single-familiy houses, small businesses or public facilities. Furthermore, they can be directly con-nected to private power network to cover peak loads or to limit power consumption from the public grid. For industrial & infrastructure applications, the ADS-TEC energy storage systems can be scaled up to the MWh range and are available as battery containers in 20- oder 40-foot format. All battery storage systems include an energy management system (EMS) developed by ads-tec. With the EMS – among other functions – charging and discharging processes can be monitored and efficiently controlled at any time by the users.
