With its series of ‘Debate Evening’ events at the Hotel Graf Zeppelin in Stuttgart, the EnBW Foundation for Energy and Climate Protection is providing a platform for discussing key energy industry aspects and questions relating to climate protection.

The podium discussion held on 19th June 2018 examined the question: ‘What type of and how many storage systems are needed for the energy transition?’ The guest speakers were: ADS-TEC Managing Director Thomas Speidel, Daniel Schwarz, the Energy Regulation Officer of the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA), and EnBW Group expert Dr. habil. Jörg Jasper. Thomas Speidel focused on the need for storage systems to provide flexibility in the energy system which, particularly with increasing e-mobility, requires a great deal of power. Decentralised battery storage systems can provide high distribution network performance and thus support the network. As President of the German Energy Storage Association BVES e.V., Speidel highlighted, among many other things, how various storage technologies interact with each other, working in tandem much as in an ‘orchestra’ to drive the energy transition forward.

The debate evening kicked off with speakers holding keynote speeches. The ADS-TEC Managing Director thereby explained the difference between energy and performance and showed that there is an abundance of renewable energy, but that a problem of time lag and local distribution exists. External visitors were able to tune into the event via live stream to follow the discussion and to participate with their questions at the end.
